Steel winch bumpers serve several noble purposes.  They provide a platform for securely mouting a winch to your rig, so that it can be operated without causing vehicle damage.  They protect your front end from dings and debris encountered on the trail.  They provide far better approach angles than original equipment.  And finally, they also typically have recovery points built in.
